Craigslist is a great site for getting the word out about something you have to sell or rent. It’s also seems to be a site scammers are finding attractive.
Yesterday I received an email from a past client who is out of state was checking out a rental home on Craigslist. He wanted me to check to make sure the home wasn’t scheduled for foreclosure in our tax records. He also provided me with name of the “owner” who had responded to him on Craigslist.
When I checked out tax records I saw the owner’s name was different than the name he provided to me. When my client asked the Scammer to provide proof he was the owner, he never heard from him again.
Here’s the story:
Apparently the Scammer placed a rental ad taken from an old rental listing. When my client inquired, the Scammer said he was a civil engineer who worked for Petrolis oil & was going to be in West Africa for 2-3 years so he was renting the home for that time. He also called from a international number and said he would fedex the keys as soon as he had a signed rental contract & he had the rental deposit via a money order or western union.
More and more people are using the Craigslist site to find a rental home as rentals have become a little more scarce here in the Valley. Please be aware that if you’re shopping on Craigslist and are asked to send a money order or moneygram out of the country.. you should run like the wind that’s blowing every single red flag in your brain.
I received a call today from one someone thinking about selling his home. He was concerned because all he’s heard is the media hype about how the market has declined 30% since the buyer credit went away. All I can say is Hogwash.
We all know the media is infamous for spewing negativity. I don’t even watch the news anymore since it’s such a downer.
Take the real estate market.
Every home I have listed and have under contract sold in less than 32 days with 42% of my listings selling within the first week. The listing I took last week received 4 competing offers, and the last 3 listings that sold in the last 2 weeks were sold with the buyer removing the appraisal contingency. This does not look like a declining market to me. All of these listings were traditional resales and further proof that the buying public loves a “regular” sale.
Why isn’t the media sharing this good news? Because good news is apparently boring.
